When Does a Brazing Process Change Need Revalidation?

Use a risk-based review of materials, fixtures, recipes and inspection methods to decide the evidence needed after a brazing process change.

A process change needs an evidence-based review whenever it could alter the product characteristics covered by the existing qualification. The question is not whether the change looks small, but whether previous validation still represents the new condition.

DESCRIBE THE CHANGE PRECISELY

Record the original and proposed material, geometry, fixture, preparation route, recipe or inspection method. State the reason for the change and the products affected. A request labelled equivalent supplier or minor adjustment is not sufficient without describing what is equivalent and how that conclusion was reached.

CONNECT THE CHANGE TO A POSSIBLE EFFECT

A fixture change may influence location and thermal response. A material change may affect joint behavior. A loading change may alter the product temperature profile. An inspection change may affect defect detection. Identify the plausible effect and choose verification that can detect it.

BUILD A PROPORTIONATE PLAN

The plan can combine document review, targeted trials, dimensional checks, joint examination and functional testing as appropriate. Define acceptance criteria, representative samples and approval responsibility before testing. Where customer approval is required by the agreed process, obtain it before releasing changed production.

KEEP THE TRANSITION TRACEABLE

Record the first affected batch and the revisions of tooling, instructions and recipes. Remove ambiguity between old and new conditions at the point of use. Retain the qualification evidence so a later investigation can distinguish production before and after the change.

FREQUENT QUESTION: DOES EVERY CHANGE REQUIRE A COMPLETE REQUALIFICATION?

No. The scope should match the potential effect and applicable requirements. However, the decision to perform a limited check should be documented, just as the decision to perform a full requalification would be.

RELEASE CHECKLIST

Confirm the approved change description, completed evidence, updated instructions, operator communication and batch identification. Close outstanding issues explicitly rather than assuming that a successful trial automatically completes the change.
