First Article Inspection: Connect Every Result to a Drawing Revision
Connect first article measurements, material evidence and approved changes to one controlled product configuration before production release.
China Thermic Editorial Team

A first article inspection record should identify exactly which product configuration was evaluated. A complete measurement table is difficult to use if it refers to an obsolete drawing or omits a change introduced during development. Connect the sample identity, drawing revision and inspection evidence before treating the result as support for production release.
FREEZE THE REVIEW BASIS
List the drawings, specifications and approved changes that define the sample. Include the relevant revision of each document. Identify any open deviation separately so the reviewer can distinguish the intended production configuration from a temporary development condition. Avoid relying on an email description that has not been incorporated into the controlled review package.
MAKE REQUIREMENTS TRACEABLE
Map each required characteristic to the relevant result or evidence. This may include dimensional inspection, material documentation and specified performance tests. State the method used and identify the sample or samples involved. Do not imply that every result came from one physical unit if several units were evaluated for different purposes.
REVIEW OMITTED CHARACTERISTICS
A blank cell should have a clear disposition. Record whether a characteristic was not applicable, not inspected or awaiting evidence, and identify the authorized explanation. Unresolved requirements should remain visible to the release decision maker. A visually tidy report should not hide incomplete verification.
CONTROL CHANGES AFTER APPROVAL
When a design or process change occurs, assess which earlier evidence remains applicable and what additional verification is needed. The scope depends on the change and the governing requirements. A previous first article approval is not blanket approval for every future revision, but neither should the review assume that all evidence must always be repeated without considering its relevance.
FREQUENT QUESTION: IS FIRST ARTICLE APPROVAL THE SAME AS ROUTINE LOT RELEASE?
No. The first article review addresses the evaluated configuration and its verification basis. Routine production still needs the agreed controls and release checks for the products being delivered.
HANDOVER CHECKLIST
Keep the configuration index, sample identifiers, results, deviations and approval record together. Ensure production and quality teams can retrieve the same approved revision before manufacturing the next batch.
